In this photo, Mega Lucky (left) and some other duck (right) are having a good time eating grass and bugs.  The ducks also have to stay wary for the hawks, because the hawks are constantly trying to kill my ducks.  Mega Lucky was being careless, because she was out in the open.  The other duck is being very careful, because she is hiding in the bushes.  The good strategy here would be: 1- don't let them free range when you're not looking at them, and 2- make sure to have a good pen.  Make sure that there is fencing on top of your pen, so that predators don't get in.  Thank you for reading the Ducky Blog! -Henry

Hawk Update

Hawks have been very dangerous lately.  Recently the hawks have been attacking my chicken coop, and my chickens and ducks.  We have gotten these 2 bigger hawks, that live here.  Some others come for visits.  They first showed up about 5 months ago.  I noticed back in November, that these bigger hawks started to harass my birds.  They were flying over them, and trying to kill them with their talons and beaks.

So, the Hawks got one my ducks a few months ago.  Since then, the ducks and the chickens have stayed in their pen 24/7.  They still get to play in their pen, so they can dust-bathe and get some bugs that come in.  They catch some of the bugs, but it is much harder that eating bugs from a bag.

I have seen the hawks on the tree, and often going to their nest and putting twigs in there.  Sometimes I see them staring at my chickens before flying off to hunt something else.  They would love to get to my ducks but this is really hard.  The hawks haven't really done too much, but they check in every once in a while.  Hawks don't announce their presence like other predators.  You have to keep an eye out to even notice them!  Thank you for reading the Ducky Blog. -Henry

I was inspired by my chickens and ducks to do "Ducky Comics."  I have done a fundraiser for 4-H, and plan to continue doing so in the future.  -Henry, 14
